Actually like most teams, they didn’t meet the salary cap of $55M for the 07-08 NBA Season.
I believe they went over by about $20Million, which is quite typical. Going over the Salary cap is allowed but this forces teams that trade players to remain within 125% of the incoming trade value.
Garnet is the only MAX player on the Celtics –one of the highest contracts in the NBA, I think its around $22Million. Allen & Pierce make about $16M a piece. The rest of the Celtic Role players each make $600k to about $4Million.
Garnet was traded for [Al Jefferson], [Selbastian Telfair], [Gerard Green], [Theo Ratliff], + Draft Picks.
The Key player in this particular trade was “Theo Ratliff”–who had a large contract worth about $10Million, without him the trade would of been impossible since the rest of the players were all on low-scale ‘rookie contracts’, of $700K-$3M.
To summarize, Minnesota sent Garnet’s $22 Million contract to Boston and in return got about $19Million back in contracts.

Giving away most of its players then picking up free agents at minimum who wanted to play with KG, Allen, and Pierce.
